Job Opening for Library Director

Your Home Public Library, Johnson City, NY, is accepting applications for the position of Library Director II. The library has 11 full and part-time Staff and an annual budget of $630,000, approved by the voters November 2008. The library is a member of the Four County Library System and is fully automated.

Minimum qualifications: Possession of an ALA accredited MLS degree and four years professional experience, with at least one year in an administrative/supervisory capacity. Must have or be eligible for the New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate.

Applicants should be fluent in the use of computer technology to deliver library service and have the ability to manage all aspects of the library program, including collection development, hiring and supervising of library staff, preparing and monitoring a budget, public relations, and supervising the general maintenance of the building and grounds. The Director’s schedule includes evening and Saturday hours. This position qualifies for the New York State Retirement System.

Library Director II is a classified position subject to a Civil Service examination comprised of an evaluation of education and work experience.

Salary range: $60,000 – 63,000

Movie Night- Dead Poets Society

Celebrate graduation month with us for a showing of Dead Poets Society on Thursday, June 6th at 6:00 PM, starring Robin Williams and Ethan Hawke. The film tells the story of a stuffy boys academy in Vermont, where an unorthodox new English professor teaches his students the beauty of poetry and being true to yourself. It runs 129 minutes and is FREE and open to the public. For more information on this Academy Award nominated classic, click here.

Read the poem that inspired the most famous scene in the film, “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman. It can be found in his anthology Leaves of Grass, right here at Your Home Public Library!

Blue Dot Book Sale & 50/50 Raffle

We will be holding a book sale on Saturday, May 18th from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. All blue dotted items will sell for just 10 cents each! So come support the library and get some great bargains on used books. The sale will also feature a 50/50 raffle, and who couldn’t use a little extra cash all for a great cause? We hope to see you there.

Weed Walk

On Wednesday, May 15 at 7:00 PM, join us as Abigail Stevens presents her monthly herb class on our flowerbed nemesis and backyard bother…the weed. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes & bring a jacket as we travel outside for a hands-on excursion where we will identify and learn about the many uses of these misunderstood plants. Help Us Tend the Garden!

The Friends of the Library is looking for some volunteers to help tend the front gardens. Meet us on Saturday, May 4 at 8:30 AM on the front porch. We’ll be weeding, trimming, and spreading mulch. Please bring your own tools.

Following the gardening will be a Friends of the Library meeting at 11 AM.

Message from the Director

It has been my pleasure to serve as Library Director of Your Home Public Library since 2005. I have enjoyed working with this community to make the library the best it could be. Together we’ve accomplished some great things.

Next week I am moving into a new role as Director of the Four County Library System, where I will be doing my utmost to support all of our local libraries as they strive to maintain their high level of service. I know I am going to miss the regular interaction with patrons. I have enjoyed working with you all and that makes this transition particularly bittersweet.

I am leaving the library in the capable hands of Maryse Quinn, who will be serving as Interim Director until a permanent replacement is selected. Johnson City and its library will always occupy a special place for me. Thank you for having me. It has been an honor to serve.

Movie Night – Mamma Mia

Just us again for Movie Night on Thursday, May 2 at 6:00 PM for a free showing of Mamma Mia!

The movie tells the story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father told using hit songs by the popular ’70s group ABBA.

Starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan
